My name is Mrs. Joan Potts. I am currently the Learning Support teacher for grades Kindergarten, First, and Second at Independence Elementary School.
I have been a teacher in the Hopewell Area School District for twenty five years. Previous to that I worked at Allegheny Valley School. My Undergraduate degree is in Elementary and Special Education from Duquesne University. My Masters degree is from Slippery Rock University in Special Education.
Along with Ms. Kozel, our class has been working hard on our "School Garden". We have planted potatoes and tomatoes. We have also started a Butterfly garden. Please stop by the side of the school to visit it.
Course Outline:
Each child is taught according to their ability level. The curriculum I currently use meets each child at their level reinforcing their strengths while introducing new skills through a combination of drill and practice.
Grading Scale
The grading scale for the subjects that I teach is as follows:
A= 90% to 100%
B= 80% to 89%
C= 70% to 79%
D= 60% to 69%
E= 59% and lower
** If your child is receiving a grade lower than a C average at anytime during the 9 week period, I will be sure to call you and we can discuss our plan to rectify the situation.
Homework:
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday only. Reading will be assigned each night. Please have your child read aloud to someone. Math will be assigned as we review new lessons, mostly every other day. Any concerns I have, I will write a short note in your child's planner for you to see. Please feel free to use the planner to contact me. I check it daily.
